Choosing to maintain the natural turf weeds in the olive grove in winter.

The benefits for the environment and the producer are many.

During the winter season until the end of April/beginning of May the weeds (native vegetation) in the olive grove is not in competition with olive cultivation, as the needs for water and nutrients is limited during this period. So, their presence helps to:

-Retain and store rainwater by protecting the soil from erosion and loss of organic matter.

-Trap CO2 from the atmosphere, in conjunction with olive trees, storing it as organic matter and nitrogen in the soil. In this way, they contribute to protecting the environment, while at the same time increasing the organic matter of the soil, thereby reducing the need for fertilization (sustainable agriculture).

-Maintain the natural balance of harmful and beneficial organisms (insects), which feed on the flowers of weeds in the olive grove, preventing the outbreak of enemies to olives such as the lekanio and the bambakada.

-Finally, the physical presence of the weeds makes it easy to access the grove in order to carry out tasks such as pruning, which starts at this time.
