The strong smell of olives definitely leads visitors along the paths of a mythical Giant. Kyklopas (Greek for the mythical Cyclops) in Makri, Northern Greece has had its own olive mill since 1982. The new season of olive oil production has just begun and local olive producers are already filling the premises.
What makes this olive mill stand out from the rest? Gold! One gold award bring on another and being at the top of the game simply becomes the norm. More to the point, another success for Kyklopas in 2013 came in the form of a Gold Award at an extra virgin olive oil competition in Israel!
“Our olive oil is considered one of the best in the world”, says Mr. Kelidis, the heart and soul of the mill, and smiles at the thought of Kyklopas olive oil being found on dining tables in Paris, Munich, London and New York City.
Early harvest olive oil, the first product of this year's olive oil extraction, is already filling the silos. Morsels of bread dipped in fresh oil is certainly the best way to say goodbye to Kyklopas, as well as to the more than hospitable owners ...
