Greek Public Television (ERT): 27 Awards for Kyklopas
Olive harvesting has begun in earnest in Thrace, Northern Greece and olive oil producers have reason to be happy. According to the owner of Kyklopas Olive Mill in Makri, Mr. Argyris Kellidis, this year will see large quantities and good quality oil. He explains: ‘Previous years, we needed 7-8 kg of olives to produce a kilogram of oil, this year we are at 4.5-5 kg of olives per kilogram of oil’. He goes on to disclose that starting this year, it is with pride that Kyklopas is now ISO certified in three areas: ISO 22 000 for the mill, ISO 22 000 for packaging, but also ISO 9000 for the production process!
Mrs. Niki Kellidis
Kyklopas olive oil has become so famous that it has crossed the Greek borders, travelling to all corners of the globe. ‘Consider that this year alone we have won 27 global awards. We are in eighth place in the world rankings. A big deal for a small olive mill, a small family-run business, on the edge of the world, right here in the region of Thrace, Northern Greece’, explains Mr. Kellidis with pride as ‘father’ of the family, having by his side his wife, the tireless Niki Kellidis and their two daughters, who are continuing the great family tradition. ‘Kyklopas is eighth in the world, ahead of Kalamata, Crete, Spain and other areas with a long olive oil tradition’ reflects Mr. Kellidis, citing the previous year’s oil as some of the finest. ‘There were no olive fruit flies, acidity was low and the quality excellent, and that is how we got the first and second place in Greece, it is not a matter of luck’.
