Manolis G. Sergis, chose as his topic of presentation at this conference the contribution of our family to the olive culture in our region.
The Department of History and Ethnology at the Democritus University of Thrace and the Historical Museum of Alexandroupolis recently organized an international scientific conference on "Alexandroupolis: the history of the city and its region", which took place from 15 to 17 October 2021 in Alexandroupolis.
The aim of the conference was to contribute to the scientific research on the history of the city and its wider region, as well as to the emergence of lesser-known aspects of the economic, social and cultural life of the people who first settled there. It was an honour for Professor Emeritus of the Democritus University of Thrace, Manolis G. Sergis, chose as his topic of presentation at this conference the contribution of our family to the olive culture in our region.
He sees it as a folklore example about how the past survives in the modern technological present, and how further research can help identify the similarities observed between the past and the present as expressions of cultural continuity, to prove that popular traditional culture survives and thrives within modernity, within modern technological culture and has not disappeared as some believe. His talk was titled "A folklore perspective of the modern olive culture in Thrace, with reference to the Kyklopas olive mill in Makri, Alexandroupolis.
Contribution to the study of the modern economy of the city, the world of work and the management of a family business at the time of the economic crisis"
